Henry Martin
Writer, Historian

Henry is a brilliant writer and a historian whose work on Fluxus artists are unparalleled. Henry has sent us the following text.

Caspar David Friedrich had no interest in recording typical cloud formations. He did not want to render the peculiarities of particular types of clouds, but hoped instead to capture the space of the skies themselves as the theater of the numinous. This is why Friedrich, in 1816, declined when apprised of Goethe's desire (more an order than a request) that he supply him with sketches of the various orders of cloud formations, for use as illustrations of the meteorological theories of the English scientist Luke Howard. Friedrich's commitment was much more centered on perusing the cloud-streaked heavens with a view to giving visibility to at least some tiny part of the mystery which at one and the very same time they both point toward and hide.
